8 reasons to visit an acupuncturist trained in orthopedic and traditional acupuncture

When you visit an acupuncturist trained in orthopaedic as well as traditional acupuncture, you really are getting the best of both worlds, here’s why:

  1. You may have issues with individual muscles or your posture which has you heading for an injury

An acupuncturist trained in orthopaedic methods will be able to assess your posture and gait as well as testing individual muscles for inhibition or tightness.  Left uncorrected, postural and muscular issues will leave you vulnerable to injury and pain from training or even from everyday activities.

  1. Left uncorrected, muscle inhibition and tightness will lead to arthritis

One way the painful condition of osteoarthritis forms is when tightness of a muscle causes pressure on a joint it is connected to via a tendon and, over time, this dysfunction causes excessive wear and tear, then inflammation and finally presenting with arthritis years later.  This can be avoided with assessment and correction of the tightness or dysfunction in the muscle before it progresses into a painful condition.

  1. You have pain or injury

If you have hurt yourself, an acupuncturist will do a full assessment and form a treatment plan just for you – the aim will be to reduce your pain and restore full function as quickly as possible. This plan can include motor point acupuncture: acupuncture at the neuromuscular junction which gets inhibited muscles working correctly again, trigger point acupuncture, electroacupuncture: use of a tiny current through the needles to increase effectiveness of the treatment, and, distal acupuncture, a traditional acupuncture method where needles are placed in active sites away from the injury; this method has been shown to be very effective in reducing pain.

  1. Your acupuncturist is also trained in cupping therapy

You know those cool circular marks sported by elite athletes such as Michael Phelps, well, you too could have these!  Cupping therapy has been around for a very long time, and not just used in traditional Chinese medicine, but in many other areas of the world as well.  It became popular among athletes in recent years as it is an effective treatment for pain and tightness in muscles.

  1. Your acupuncturist has done thousands of hours of training in needling techniques

It is possible for other therapists to do a weekend course and offer dry needling therapy, and while this may provide results in cases where dry needling(also called trigger point needling) are indicated, they will not be able to match the years of technique and the scope of practice of a qualified acupuncturist trained in orthopaedic acupuncture.

  1. You want to fulfil your potential in your chosen sport

I frequently help serious athletes to achieve their full potential; achieving their personal bests and maintaining better endurance and faster recovery following training.

  1. Your acupuncturist can also treat internal conditions

There are many conditions which can be helped by acupuncture including migraine headaches, digestive disorders, menstrual irregularities, insomnia, seasonal allergies, and many more.

  1. Tune ups

Once the pain and dysfunction are gone, regular tune ups, once a month or so, will help prevent the pain from returning and catch any new imbalances before they turn into a more serious problem.
