Acupuncture and Menopause

The menopause is a stage in life dreaded by most women, given the symptoms it is known to bring; hot flashes, insomnia, night sweats, mood swings, weight gain, anxiety, depression, loss of libido and energy.  These symptoms can vary in onset, severity and duration.  The Traditional Chinese Medicine view of the menopause is at this stage in the woman’s life, there is decline of both the Kidney Yin and the Kidney Yang, with one of these, more commonly, Kidney Yin decline, taking predominance.  The Yin in Yin and Yang represents the still, moistening, cooling qualities, so with this in decline hot flashes, insomnia and night sweats come about.

Acupuncture treatment provides support for this transition in a woman’s life, easing the symptoms to provide a much smoother transition.  Studies show acupuncture reducing hot flashes significantly(in one study for 6 months after the end of 6 months of treatment).  There have also been documented results showing a reduction in insomnia, night sweats, anxiety and depression.
